A jarring clank and thud ferociously yanked me back from the grips of fiction (I must have kicked the violet tea set by accident). The image of Jack collapsing fades out with a jolt through my body. The blinding light slowly grows dim and the room is not with Jack, or his odiferous smoke, anymore.

Back to my time and place from another time and place, the hermetically sealed room is aglow with movie credits. I thought to myself about how it seemed as if I was in the film, a cinema-influenced dream with all of the terror that I felt three or four years ago. Using the movie as an improvisational springboard, I was drowning in the deepest folds of memory.

Jack was a dream; even in real life he was a dream. It was Jack who captured my imagination: a brilliant husband, a hard athlete, and in the marathon, breath-taking. He lives on solely in my mind now. My life is a still life. Looking out the window, I instantly recognize that I am not as hungry as I painfully once was. Back in the apartment where my late husband’s body is no longer, I collect some of the strewn-about mess and return the better half of the golden fruit to the refrigerator. He was here, however unclear or nuclear.

THE END is the start.
